Local notebook: Blue Knights race to another crown

Another meet, another title.

The Lunenburg High girls track team captured the District E Division 2 Gerry Frew Invitational at Fitchburg High School  with 114.75 points on Saturday, easily outrunning second-place Littleton (77 points).

A quartet of Blue Knights were named district champions individually, with Abby Rodriquenz (1,000), Sarah Viveiros (shot put), Carli Stanford (300) and Lauren Long (2 mile) posting first-place finishes in their respective events.

Long also placed second as part of the 4×880 relay, along with Breanna Bajko, Olivia Coronella and Illiana Thomas, while Rodriquenz was the final runner in the second-place 4×440 relay with Rylan Arnold, Emma King and Karynna Long.

Arnold took second in the 600 for the Blue Knights and Liz Morton was the runner up in the high jump.

Karynna Long added a third-place showing in the 55m hurdles, while Emma King (300) and Alexa Jenkins (shot put) also had third-place finishes in their respective events. Jenkins also claimed sixth in the 55m dash.

Olivia Coronella (600), Kendra Eberhardt (1,000), Bajko (mile) and Lilia Baril  (high jump) had fourth-place finishes, while Thomas took fifth in the 2 mile. Anita White (300) and Lyla Dellasanta (55m hurdles) posted sixth-place finishes for the Blue Knights.

Wolves compete at Central/West meet

The Nashoba Regional girls co-op swim team took part in the Central/West Meet at Springfield College on Sunday, finishing 25th place with 14 points.

The 200 medley relay team of Campbell Phillips, Ariel Larrabee, Emma Reiner and Paige Mason finished 15th with a time of 2:08.54, while the 200 freestyle relay of Mason, Erin Coughlan, Reiner and Phillips took  15th with a time of 1:53.56.

Reiner placed 11th in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:14.24, qualifing her for the Division 2 state meet next weekend at MIT. Phillips placed 17th in the 100-yard breaststroke with a season-best time of 1:15.91.

Macchioni snags MASCAC honor

Fitchburg State freshman goaltender Max Macchioni was named Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Ice Hockey Goaltender of the Week on Monday.

The first-year netminder earned his sixth weekly accolade of the year after totaling 26 saves with a 1.00 goals against average and a .963 save percentage in a 4-1 triumph over UMass Dartmouth on Thursday evening as the Falcons won their third straight contest.

In his first collegiate campaign, Macchioni is 7-5-3 with a 2.46 goals against average and a .932 save percentage.

The Fitchburg State ice hockey team (11-9-3, 8-5-3 MASCAC) returns to action Thursday when it welcomes Westfield State University to the Wallace Civic Center for a MASCAC contest starting at 6:30 p.m.

Local Roundup: Blue Knights run to title

The Lunenburg High girls track team stormed to the Mid-Wach C title Friday night at Fitchburg High School, compiling 155 points after putting together a 5-0 dual meet record.

Littleton had 105 points to finish second, followed by Hudson (34), Quabbin Regional (32), Gardner (23) and Oakmont Regional (21).

Abby Rodriquenz was a double winner for the Blue Knights, taking the mile and 1,000m, while Carli Stanford was victorious in the 55 and 300.

Lauren Long won the 2 mile and Sarah Viveiros finished first in the shot put for Lunenburg.

Earning key second-place finishes were Alexa Jenkins (shot put), Breanna Bajko (mile),  Karynna Long (55m hurdles), the 4x800m relay of Olivia Coronella, Kendra Eberhardt, Casey Corey and Bajko, and the 4x400m relay team of Long, Emma King, Anita White and Rylan Arnold.

Picking up third-place points were Illiana Thomas (2 mile), King (300), Arnold (600), Lauren Long (1,000), and the 4x200m relay of Reese Haefner, Viveiros, Sophia Viveiros and Jenkins.

Reese Haefner picked up fouth place in the 55, while King and Lilia Baril tied for fourth in the high jump.

Taking fifth were Alexa Jenkins (55), Olivia Coronella (600), White (300), Lyla Dellasanta (55m hurdles), Cassie Cohen (shot put) and Illiana Thomas (mile). Sixth place finishers for Lunenburg were Casey Corey (600), Liz Morton (high jump) and Maddie Sweet (2 mile).

Men’s basketball

Fitchburg State 70, Framingham State 66: The Falcons improved to 8-11 (3-5 MASCAC) with the victory at home Saturday afternoon.

The Falcons opened the game with six straight points off buckets from Mikal Garcia, Dayne Allen and Quincy Taylor before the Rams answered with a pair of 3-pointers from Marshall Martin and Ryan England.

Trailing 16-11, the Rams knotted the game with a 3-ball and a layup from Juran Ligonde. Newcomer Tyrone Manderson completed a three-point play and Matthew Tanis drained a 3-pointer to push the Falcons’ lead to 24-20, but Framingham State regained the lead with eight straight points from JD Okafor.

Fitchburg State closed out the frame with a 9-0 run capped by a buzzer-beating trey from Tanis to even the game at 37 at halftime.

The teams traded baskets to start the second half. Framingham State took a five-point edge at 51-46 with a layup from Martin and a jumper from Ivan Nyantenji. With less than three minutes remaining Allen hit a jumper and Tajahn Joyner sank two at the free-throw line to forge the Falcons ahead 60-59.

The Rams countered with a 3-pointer from Jahden Erold to cut the deficit to 65-63 with twenty seconds to play, but four points from Joyner at the charity stripe sealed the Falcons’ victory.

Joyner paced the Falcons with 21 points, five rebounds and five assists, while Garcia added 12 points and Tanis chipped in with 11 points off the bench.

Women’s basketball

Framingham State 92, Fitchburg State 68: The Falcons dropped to 3-18 (1-7 MASCAC) with the loss at home

The Rams led 43-39 at halftime, but turned it on in the second half to leave Fitchburg with the victory.

Olivia Almeida scored 19 points to lead Fitchburg State. Rylie Harlow added 12 points in the loss.
