A baby boy who died after he was found unresponsive inside a vehicle in a Lexington, Massachusetts, parking lot was likely in the car for “an extended period of time,” the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office said Thursday.
Police were first called to the parking lot of a day care on Massachusetts Avenue around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday after the child was found unresponsive in his mother’s vehicle. The boy was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators said it seems the child never made it inside the day care on the day of his death and was likely inside the car for “an extended period of time.” The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine cause and manner of death.
The Department of Children and Families released a brief statement Thursday afternoon.
“The Department of Children and Families received a report and is investigating. It is important to remember, especially during the hot summer months, that cars can become unsafe for children in a matter of minutes.”
They declined to comment further on the specific case, citing federal privacy requirements.

A woman has been indicted on a murder charge months after a Weymouth, Massachusetts, woman was found dead in her home in April.
Kelly Shaw, 44, was indicted this month in the murder of Christine Mello. Investigators say Shaw had been staying with Mello at her home in Weymouth.
Mello was reported missing before her body was found in the Lake Street home on April 1, the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office has said. Police initially described the case as an apparent homicide but no one was immediately charged in her death. Instead, Shaw and another man, John “Jack” Harper, 45, were accused of theft, including larceny of a motor vehicle and forging checks.
Shaw was indicted on first-degree murder by a Norfolk County Grand Jury this month. She pleaded not guilty in court Thursday.
Shaw has been in custody since her arrest in April and was ordered held without bail on the murder charge. She is next scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 30.
Harper has not been indicted for murder. The case remains under investigation.
A friend told NBC10 Boston that Mello had recently inherited money and was hoping to buy the home she was living in.
