Boston Mayor Michelle Wu announced Tuesday morning that the city will hold a rolling rally parade on Friday at 11 a.m. to celebrate the Boston Celtics’ 18th NBA Championship.
During the parade, the mayor’s office said Celtics players will celebrate on Boston’s famous duck boats, which has been the tradition in the city for past championship teams.
The parade will begin in front of TD Garden on Causeway Street, passing by City Hall Plaza and the Boston Common on Tremont Street and ending on Boylston Street by the Hynes Convention Center.
The city will hold a press conference at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday to share additional event details, including safety measures to make the parade a family-friendly celebration and preparations for the heat wave expected this week.
Wu spoke Monday about how the upcoming heat wave might factor in to any Celtics celebrations, and she said there were meetings going on Monday morning at City Hall, “to talk through what the projections are and what the forecasts are, if it is likely to be above a certain threshold of the heat index for multiple days at a time.”
Later Monday, Wu’s office declared a heat emergency in Boston, triggering cooling centers and other measures to keep the population cool.
“It’s also the last week of school in the Boston Public Schools, and so there’s some half days, and we’re thinking about how that affects students who might need a full day of support as well,” Wu said. “So we’ll have more to come probably very shortly on that front.”
The Celtics beat the Dallas Mavericks 106-88 on Monday night to win the franchise’s 18th championship, breaking a tie with the Los Angeles Lakers for the most in league history. It was the first time they’d won the NBA title since 2008 and marks the 13th championship won this century by one of Boston’s Big 4 professional sports franchises.

The Karen Read murder trial continues Tuesday without the jury. Instead, the court will interview witnesses who may appear on the stand later.
Monday’s testimony focused on the alleged pedestrian crash involving Read and her Boston police officer boyfriend, John O’Keefe.
Massachusetts State Police Trooper Joe Paul was grilled on his qualifications concerning crash reconstruction. Another state trooper, Nicholas Guarino, read a series of text messages between Read and O’Keefe that suggested the couple was struggling.
Court is closed Wednesday for Juneteenth. Testimony resumes on Thursday.

We are all NBA champs after Monday night, especially because gear went on sale the minute the game ended giving fans the opportunity to grab the hottest T-shirts, hats, jerseys and other gear.
But remember, this isn’t just any ole swag. Celtics fans have waited 16 long years to celebrate a championship and the merch is top notch.
Inside the Dick’s House of Sport on Boylston Street Monday night was like Christmas. Fans were grabbing up everything they could, fresh off the excitement of clinching Banner 18, and the aisles were packed.
It almost looked like a Black Friday sale but that just goes to show how much pride and love they have for their team.
“Let’s go, Celtics! I’ve been waiting on this my whole life. I’m so proud of every single one of you. let’s go, Celtics!” said a fan.
“We’ve been putting a lot of work in on the couch watching you guys…hyped. Let’s go! Banner 18, baby. We’re special, we love you,” said another fan.
The good news, too, is there’s championship merch for every budget.
On the high end, you can spend $2,000 for a limited edition, autographed 2024 NBA Finals jersey with four signatures — there’s only 250 of those jerseys — or you can spend $40 for a snazzy snapback with the gold champions letterman stich and call it a day.
The Dick’s on Boyleston Street will most likely be flooded with fans when they open at 9 a.m. Tuesday.

After the Boston Celtics big win, a sea of green washed over Boston Monday night.
Fans were filling Causeway Street outside the TD Garden long before the game ended Monday night.
Many of these fans had been waiting to celebrate Banner 18 since the Celtics won their last championship back on June 17, 2008. But some of them were probably just little kids back then.
The crowds were mostly peaceful, with some pushing the limits by climbing up light posts and traffic signals or sitting on top of some of the surrounding buildings.
Others were seen setting off small fireworks from the crowd.
There aren’t any reports of any injuries so far, and a large amount of Boston police could be seen monitoring the crowds throughout the hours-long celebration. However, The Boston Globe reports that Boston police did arrest five people during those celebrations outside the Garden overnight.
Overall, though, fans were positive, excited and emotional as they celebrated the Celtics’ NBA Finals win.
“There’s nobody like Boston though. This crowd is crazy, it’s amazing and you know what, I feel like I’m home because I am,” said one fan.
“This is what the Celtics community’s all about. You feel it? It feels like you’re inside the TD Garden,” said another fan.
“This is the greatest place in the world in the greatest city in the world, with the best basketball team in the world, and the best crowd in the world — let’s go!” said a fan.
And this team looked so good this season and post-season, it seems fans may not have to wait another 16 years for another party like this one.

It’s time to sizzle. Tuesday is day one of high temperatures in the 90s.
Blazing sun will make for a somewhat typical hot summer day, but Wednesday and Thursday take the cake as the hottest of the hot in this spell.
A fiery hot ridge …
