The games will count just the same as any others when it comes to the official standings.
For a trio of teams taking part in the second annual “Hockey Day in the ‘Burg,” there’s a deeper meaning to the contests that will play out on the ice of the Wallace Civic Center. All three teams playing as hosts have ties to Jake Thibeault, the teen left paralyzed from the waist down after an on-ice incident in 2021, and the day’s games will benefit the Thibeault Family Rehabilitation Trust.
A former Fitchburg/Monty Tech standout, Thibeault went on to play at Milton Academy before being seriously injured during a Labor Day weekend tournament in 2021. The Fitchburg native is currently a freshman at Babson College who continues to work toward the goal one day walking again.
Fitchburg State (8-7-2, 6-3-2 MASCAC) will open Saturday’s contests with a conference tilt against MASCAC-leading Plymouth State (14-3-1, 11-0) at 3 p.m. Falcons head coach Dean Fuller is a longtime friend of the Thibeault family and has been one of the most vocal supporters of the 19-year-old.
The middle game will see Milton Academy squaring off with St. George’s School at 5:30 before Fitchburg/Monty Tech (8-4-0) caps the day’s action with a contest against red-hot crosstown rival St. Bernard’s (9-3-0) at 7:30.
Tickets for the event are $10 and can be purchased at the door on Saturday.
Who will lead the Blue Knights?
Come fall, the Lunenburg High football team will have a new coach leading the way. Just who that will be is yet to be decided.
Former head coach Anthony Nalen announced Wednesday he would not be returning to the Blue Knights this year. Instead, Nalen has taken the reins at Bishop Guertin High School in Nashua, N.H.
In a post on Twitter, Nalen thanked the Lunenburg football community, from players and parents to boosters and media, for making his time with the Blue Knights memorable and successful.

“This is truly a wonderful place to coach. We were able to do some special things in the last three years at Lunenburg,” Nalen wrote. “The Blue Knights have compiled an overall record of 18-9 while capturing a 2022 league championship, holding a 10-game win streak, beating Oakmont on Thanksgiving for the first time since 1978 and wins over rivals West Boylston and Littleton for the first time in almost a decade.
“This town and football program will forever hold a special place in my heart. Once a Knight, Always a Knight.”
Nalen was hired in May 2020 and led the Blue Knights for three seasons, including the shortened spring season of 2021. Last fall, Lunenburg went 5-3 in the regular season, winning the Mid-Wach D title before falling to Uxbridge in the opening round of the Division 7 state tournament.
