FITCHBURG — Police have not yet named a suspect in the roadside shooting that caused a three-car accident Tuesday afternoon but did say they believe it to be an isolated incident.
According to Police Captain Christopher Garcia, a car, being driven by a mother, 63, with her son, 22, was shot at three times while turning off River Street onto Sheldon Street Tuesday at 1 p.m. Directly after the three shots hit the passenger-side door, the sedan collided with the vehicle in front of it, as well as another.
Two people were transported to an area hospital with minor injuries, one being the 63-year-old driver of the sedan and the other being a passenger of another vehicle. The injuries were caused exclusively by the car accident.
Police couldn’t confirm any connection between the passengers of the vehicle shot at and the suspect or suspects but wanted the public to know that they don’t believe the incident was random.
“I will say that the shooting appears to be isolated,” said Garcia.
Police closed off a portion of the intersection of River Street and Sheldon Street and opened the area back up roughly two hours later. The accident is currently under investigation by the department’s detective unit and they have not yet announced the apprehension of a suspect in connection with the shooting.
