Adam Montgomery allegedly killed his 5-year-old daughter Harmony by striking her in the head because the girl was having bathroom accidents in the car they were living in, his wife told New Hampshire police.
Harmony’s dead body was then moved around in coolers and bags for months, including to a restaurant freezer at Adam’s workplace in Manchester, according to the arrest warrant that was unsealed on Tuesday.
Adam’s wife Kayla revealed the grisly details to Manchester Police during an interview last fall. After the family was evicted from their residence on the day before Thanksgiving in 2019, they lived out of their vehicle — a Chrysler Sebring that they’d park outside a Manchester apartment building.
Then on Dec. 7, 2019, Adam struck Harmony while in the car, killing the girl, Kayla told police.
“Kayla stated that while living in the vehicle together, Adam was extremely upset that five-year-old Harmony was not saying when she needed to go to the bathroom and was having accidents in the car,” the arrest warrant reads.
After each accident, Adam would strike Harmony in the face/head with a closed fist, Kayla said.
When Adam fatally hit Harmony, he allegedly turned from the driver’s seat, striking Harmony “with sets of three-to-four blows with a closed fist to Harmony’s face/head on three separate occasions over the course of a few minutes,” Kayla said.
After the third flurry of blows, Adam reportedly told Kayla, “I think I really hurt her this time. I think I did something.”
Harmony then moaned for about 5 minutes and then stopped making noises, according to the warrant. The couple never got Harmony medical attention or checked on her.
Adam then discovered that his daughter was dead when their car broke down in an intersection. Adam reacted by pulling out an Under Armour duffle bag from the trunk and placing Harmony’s lifeless body inside the bag.
The girl’s body was then moved to various locations over the next several months, Kayla told police. That included the walk-in cooler at Portland Pie Company, where Adam worked as a dishwasher and cook. Harmony’s body was apparently stuffed in a tote bag and placed in the freezer.
Adam pleaded not guilty in October to second-degree murder, falsifying physical evidence and abuse of a corpse on charges in the alleged murder of Harmony. He’s scheduled for trial in November.
Adam was convicted by a jury last week on six unrelated charges, including two counts each of being an armed career criminal, receiving stolen property, and theft.
Kayla is serving an 18-month prison sentence. She had pleaded guilty to charges that she lied to a grand jury about where she was working the day she last saw Harmony.
Harmony hasn’t been seen since 2019, but authorities didn’t know she was missing until November 2021. Last year, police announced that they believed she was killed in Manchester in early December 2019, a time period that aligns with the events described in the arrest warrant unsealed Tuesday.
