Quabbin Regional’s Abigail Ramsey netted the lone goal of the contest as the Panthers field hockey team blanked host Lunenburg 1-0 on Friday afternoon at McCarron Turf Field.
Third-seeded Quabbin advances to Tuesday’s CMADA Class B Final where it will play top-seeded Oakmont Regional. Second-seeded Lunenburg (14-4) will now wait until Tuesday for the Division 4 state tournament pairings to be announced.
Lunenburg goalie Malia Ruggiero made eight saves for the Blue Knights.
Football
Leominster 12, Shrewsbury 6: Ricky Encarnacion caught a touchdown pass from Osiris Lopez with eight seconds left to break a 6-all tie. Ma’Kai Stinson Newton scored a touchdown for the Blue Devils (7-1) in the first quarter.
College hockey
Fitchburg State 3, New England College 0: Cole Archambeault potted what proved to be the only offense the Falcons (1-0-0) needed in the second period, while Wyatt Wilmshurst and Toivo Kramer added insurance goals in the third.
Christian Halbig, Anthony Ceolin and Oliver Cookson picked up assists in the victory. Max Macchioni stopped 27 shots to earn his first collegiate win with the shutout.
Men’s basketball
Fitchburg State has been selected to finish fourth in the 2022-23 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Preseason Coaches Poll with a total of 19 points.
Westfield State was selected to claim the conference title after earning six of the seven first-place votes for a total of 36 points to out distance second-place Worcester State’s total of 31 points, which included the final first-place ballot.
Salem State was third with 26 points, ahead of Fitchburg State’s19 points. Bridgewater State was fifth with 14 points, while MCLA and Framingham State rounded out this year’s preseason poll in sixth and seventh with 11 points and 10 points, respectively.
The Falcons will kick off the season Nov. 8 as they travel to Regis College for a non-conference game at 8 p.m.
